How to Write Effective AI Prompts
Master the art of communicating with AI to generate better code, debug faster, and accelerate your development.
Developers who write clear prompts get better results from AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot. A good prompt is structured, specific, and gives the AI enough context to help you effectively.
The structure of a good prompt
Every effective prompt has four key elements:
Context
Set the scene. What language, framework, or environment are you using? What have you already tried?
Task
Be clear about what you want. "Write a function that..." or "Explain why..." or "Fix the bug in..."
Instructions
Add constraints. "Use async/await", "Keep it under 50 lines", "Include error handling".
Format
Specify the output. "Return only the code", "Explain step by step", "Use JSDoc comments".
make a buttonToo vague — what kind of button, which style, which features?
Create a React button component that: (1) accepts label and onClick as props, (2) has a loading state with a spinner, (3) is disabled while loading, (4) uses Tailwind for styling. Return only the component code.Specific — language, framework, constraints, and format are clear.
Tips for code prompts
- 1Include the language and framework in your first sentence.
- 2Paste relevant code when asking for fixes or explanations.
- 3Break complex requests into smaller, focused prompts.
- 4Ask for explanations if you want to learn, not just copy.
- 5Specify "don't use deprecated APIs" or "use modern syntax" when needed.
Prompt template
Copy and adapt this template for your next request:
[CONTEXT]
I'm building a [project type] in [language/framework].
[Relevant details: what you've tried, constraints, etc.]
[TASK]
[Clear, specific request]
[INSTRUCTIONS]
- [Constraint 1]
- [Constraint 2]
- [Constraint 3]
[FORMAT]
[How you want the output: code only, with comments, step-by-step, etc.]Try it: Prompt Checklist
A rule-based checklist, not an AI grader — see the reasoning section above.
Prompt Checklist
Write a prompt below. This checks it against the four pillars from this guide — it's a checklist, not an AI evaluating you.
